10 grams of honeysuckle, 5 grams of white chrysanthemum, and 10 grams of rock sugar.

How To Make

Sort through the honeysuckle and white chrysanthemum flowers to remove impurities, wash them thoroughly, and place them together in a clay pot. Add an appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain through clean cheesecloth to remove the residue, return the liquid to the clay pot, and continue simmering over low heat. Add crushed rock sugar; once it has dissolved, the tea is ready.

Efficacy

Clears heat and detoxifies; promotes diuresis and reduces swelling. Suitable for the early stages of urinary tract infections, characterized by fever, thirst, difficulty urinating, or frequent and urgent urination.

Usage

Drink as a tea substitute frequently throughout the day; consume the entire amount on the same day.

Honeysuckle (Jin-yin-hua) holds the chief position in this formula; cold and sweet in character, it travels through the Lung, Heart, Stomach meridians, working chiefly to clear heat and remove toxins, disperse wind-heat. White chrysanthemum (Ju-hua) takes the deputy (minister) role; slightly cold and sweet, bitter in character, it travels through the Lung, Liver meridians to clear heat and pacify the liver. Rock sugar (Bing-tang) rounds out the formula as the envoy herb, working to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and moderate the overall properties. In sum, the prescription clear heat and detoxify, promote diuresis and reduce swelling, aimed squarely at the urinary tract infection pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
