Commentary

Amaranth (Xian-cai) functions as the chief herb. Sweet-cool in property, it channels into the Large Intestine, Small Intestine meridians, and works to clear heat and promote urination. Light fermented black beans take the deputy (minister) role. Coix seeds (Yi-yi-ren) reinforce this deputy action, working to clear damp-heat, strengthen the spleen and relieve impediment. An appropriate amount of scallion whites act as an assistant ingredient, thus refining the overall action. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. Taken together these herbs clear heat, promote urination, detoxify, relieve restlessness, in keeping with the urinary tract infection pattern and its manifestations such as fever, restlessness.
