Commentary
Winter melon peel (Dong-gua-pi) functions as the chief herb; cool and sweet, bland in character, it travels through the Lung, Large Intestine, Small Intestine meridians, working chiefly to clear heat and promote urination. Watermelon rind (Xi-gua-pi) fills the deputy position. Sweet, bland-cool in property, it enters the Heart, Stomach, Bladder meridians and works to clear summer heat, generate fluids and promote urination. Corn silk (Yu-mi-xu) adds further support, working to promote urination, drain damp-heat and calm the liver. Assisting the core, adzuki beans (Chi-xiao-dou) take an assisting (adjuvant) role, helping to promote urination, drain dampness, reduce swelling and remove toxins. No dedicated envoy herb appears in this recipe, the actions being balanced among the active ingredients themselves. Taken together these herbs clear heat, promote diuresis, generate body fluids, quenches thirst, lower blood sugar, in keeping with the diabetes pattern.
