Commentary
Dried shiitake mushrooms serve as the monarch (chief) herb, providing the main thrust of the formula. Dried ginkgo leaves (Yin-xing-ye) serve as the deputy herb; neutral and sweet, bitter, astringent in character, it travels through the Heart, Lung meridians to activate blood, unblock the collaterals and calm the heart. Finally, honey (Feng-mi) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb; its role is to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. Taken together these herbs this formula tonifies qi, nourish yin, dispel blood stasis, lower lipids. It is, in keeping with the dyslipidemia pattern.
