Take one handful of willow twigs, each 4–5 cun long, and tie them securely with grass. First, simmer the oil until it turns black (a slightly vigorous flame is acceptable). Remove from heat and let it settle slightly, then add the willow twigs and simmer again. Remove them after a short while. Next, add the agarwood, soap pods, and croton seeds in sequence. Reduce the heat slightly to prevent boiling over, and use two willow twigs, each about one chi long, to stir constantly until the croton seeds turn purplish-black;strain out the dregs using cotton or silk cloth; add 8 liang of red Guo Dan in 2–3 separate batches, stirring continuously without stopping until a black luster appears; drip a small amount into clean, cold water—it is ready when it does not stick to your hands; pour into a stone vessel; adding a small amount of powdered frankincense while still hot is particularly effective.
