Commentary

Chuanxiong (Chuan-xiong) stands as the primary (chief) herb. Pungent-warm in property, its action follows the Liver, Gallbladder, Pericardium meridians, and works to activate blood, move qi, dispel wind and relieve pain. Bai Zhi (Bai-zhi) takes the deputy (minister) role. Pungent-warm in property, it enters the Lung, Stomach, Large Intestine meridians and works to disperse wind, dry dampness and unblock the nose. No dedicated envoy herb appears in this recipe, the actions being balanced among the active ingredients themselves.
