Commentary

Taking Qingpi (Qing-pi) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its bitter, pungent flavor and warm property: it channels into the Liver, Gallbladder, Stomach meridians and works to soothe the liver, break qi and dissipate stagnation. Curcuma (Yu-jin) stands in the deputy (minister) seat, pungent, bitter-warm in property, acting through the Liver, Spleen meridians to activate blood, move qi and relieve pain. Finally, white sugar (Bai-tang) stands as the harmonizing envoy; its role is to moisten and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. In sum, the prescription relieve liver stagnation and regulate qi, aimed squarely at the infertility pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
