Drug Formulation

Take 8 liang of high-quality sheep’s brain calamine (crushed to the size of a lotus seed, with 1 fen as the standard weight). Place it in a new copper pot filled with a child’s urine, soak for 49 days, strain out the old urine, then add fresh urine. Simmer for the duration of one incense stick; once a salty-sour taste is detected, no further simmering is needed—but do not overcook it. Grind into a fine powder. Place the medicine on a large piece of earthenware shard and calcine it over a hard charcoal fire for the duration of one incense stick.The zinc oxide will gradually turn the color of pine pollen. Carefully remove it, weigh the total amount, and divide it into 4 equal portions. Prepare each portion using the following four methods: For one portion, boil it three times in ginger juice; allow it to dry, then grind it finely and sift it. This is called “Tiger Essence Ointment”; store it in a porcelain jar to prevent air from entering;For one portion, use 1 liang each of Asarum, Schizonepeta spikelets, and Peppermint. Boil to a concentrated decoction of half a zhong, repeat the process three times, then grind finely and sift as before. This is called “Phoenix Scale Ointment” and should be stored in a separate porcelain jar;1 portion: Take 3 sheng of late-harvest silkworm sand, roast it until it turns to ash, pour half a zhong of boiling water over the ash to extract the liquid, and repeat this process three times. Allow to dry, grind to a fine powder, and sift; this is called “Qinglong Paste,” to be stored in a separate porcelain jar; 1 portion: Boil in children’s urine three times, allow to dry, grind to a fine powder, and sift; this is called “Yangnao Yu,” to be stored in a separate porcelain jar).

Instructions for Use

To treat cataracts—such as symptoms like tearing in the wind, photophobia, and blurred vision—use 6 fen of tiger bile, 2 fen of sheep brain jade, 2 fen of phoenix scales, and 1 fen 2 li of borneol; mix evenly and apply as eye drops;To treat cataracts with pterygium pulling on the cornea, red and white opacities, and ulcerated membranes, use 2 fen of tiger bile, 4 fen of sheep brain jade, 4 fen 5 li of Qinglong, and 1 fen of borneol; mix well and apply as eye drops; to treat epidemic conjunctivitis, use 7 fen of tiger bile, 3 fen of sheep brain jade, and 5 li of cinnabar (finely ground and water-washed); mix well and apply as eye drops;To treat long-standing cloud-like opacities obscuring the vision—where the patient cannot walk and sees only human silhouettes (e.g., a person in white walking by)—and cases of blood-stained sclera that are treatable, use 6 fen of Qinglong,4 fen of sheep’s brain jade. Apply 4–5 times daily using a bone hairpin; close your eyes after application and open them only when the medicine is fully absorbed. Continue until the opacity clears. Then use 2 fen of tiger bile, 2 fen of sheep’s brain jade, 3 fen of phoenix scales, 1 fen of borneol, 5 li of pearl (calcined and ground into a fine powder), and 5 li of amber (unprocessed). Grind all ingredients into a fine powder, mix thoroughly, and apply as described.
