Drug Formulation

Gallnut (crushed and washed) 3 liang, Mountain Arisaema(i.e., the root of the red golden orange flower; peel removed, dried in an oven) 2 liang, Sichuan ink (calcined until only the essence remains) 1 liang, Xusui seeds (also known as Qianjin seeds; shell removed, oil retained) 1 liang, Wulingzhi (washed) 1 liang, Banlangen (i.e., large indigo seeds; washed, dried in an oven) 1 liang, Red-toothed Euphorbia (stem removed, washed) 1 liang.

Processing

Of the ingredients listed above, take Xusui Zi and add 4 qian of musk; grind these two ingredients separately. Grind the remaining six ingredients into a fine powder. Form the mixture into pills using male duck blood; if duck blood is unavailable, glutinous rice porridge may be used instead. Divide the mixture into 49 pills and air-dry them in the shade, ensuring they are not exposed to direct sunlight.

Instructions for Use

Adjust the dosage according to the patient’s constitution—either half a pill or one whole pill—ground into a paste with ginger, mint, and well water, then taken in small sips. Take 3–5 doses in total, followed by warm congee for nourishment. To treat styes, boils, poisoning, epidemics, sore throat, jaundice with swelling, scalds and burns, and insect or snake bites, grind the pill into a paste with spring water and apply it topically; simultaneously, take half a pill orally. Itching will be felt after some time, indicating immediate efficacy.For contusions and injuries, grind one with roasted pine knots mixed with wine, take half a grain orally, and apply the mixture ground with spring water to the affected area. For male and female cases of “dian xie” (a type of spiritual possession) and for women with “ghost fetuses,” grind one pill with hot wine and divide it into two doses; if toxic, induce vomiting or purgation. For those who have hanged themselves, drowned, or died from blows or fractures—provided there is still a slight warmth in the chest and the condition has not persisted overnight—grind it with ginger and honey water and administer it orally.
