Commentary
Taking dried ginger (Gan-jiang) as the leading herb, the formula draws on its pungent flavor and hot property: it enters the Spleen, Stomach, Heart, Lung meridians and works to warm the middle and disperse cold, revive yang and dry dampness. White poria (Fu-ling) serves as the deputy herb. Sweet, bland-neutral in property, it enters the Heart, Lung, Spleen, Kidney meridians and works to drain dampness, strengthen the spleen and calm the spirit. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. Collectively, the combination dispel cold, resolve phlegm, relieve cough, alleviate wheezing, addressing the phlegm and cold pattern responsible for cold phlegm lurking in the lungs.
