Commentary
Taking Chinese yam (Shan-yao) as the leading herb, the formula draws on its sweet flavor and neutral property: it travels through the Spleen, Lung, Kidney meridians and works to tonify the spleen and lung, nourish the kidney and astringe essence. Longan flesh (Long-yan-rou) fills the deputy position. Sweet-warm in property, it enters the Heart, Spleen meridians and works to tonify the heart and spleen, nourish blood and calm the spirit. Euryale seed (Qian-shi) adds further support, working to astringe, tonify the kidney, secure essence and stop diarrhea. Among the assistants, coix seed (Yi-yi-ren) (clear damp-heat and strengthen the spleen) while white mung beans (Lu-dou) (clear heat, remove toxins and relieve summer heat). Finally, jujubes (Da-zao) play the envoy role, unifying the formula; its role is to tonify qi, nourish blood and calm the spirit, harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. Taken together these herbs strengthen the spleen and stimulate the appetite, in keeping with the spleen and stomach pattern.
