Commentary
Dong’e Ejiao (Dong-e E-jiao) holds the chief position in this formula. Sweet-neutral in property, it enters the Liver, Kidney, Lung meridians, and works to nourish blood, stop bleeding and moisten the lung. Astragalus (Huang-qi) serve as the deputy herb; slightly warm and sweet in character, it travels through the Spleen, Lung meridians to tonify qi, raise yang, secure the exterior and promote the discharge of pus. White sugar (Bai-tang) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb, working to moisten and harmonize the formula and unite the separate actions into one. Taken together these herbs tonify qi and nourish blood, raise blood pressure, in keeping with the blood and qi pattern.
