Commentary
Taking Qingpi (Qing-pi) as the leading herb, the formula draws on its bitter, pungent flavor and warm property: it channels into the Liver, Gallbladder, Stomach meridians and works to soothe the liver, break qi and dissipate stagnation. Safflower (Hong-hua) takes the deputy (minister) role, pungent-warm in property, acting through the Heart, Liver meridians to activate blood, unblock menstruation and resolve stasis. No dedicated envoy herb appears in this recipe, the actions being balanced among the active ingredients themselves. Working as one, the formula promote the flow of qi and activate blood circulation, thereby targeting the blood and qi pattern that underlies the complaint.
