Commentary
Longan (Long-yan) serves as the monarch (chief) herb; warm and sweet in character, its action follows the Heart, Spleen meridians, working chiefly to tonify the heart and spleen and nourish blood. Lotus seeds (Lian-zi) serve as the deputy herb; neutral and sweet, astringent in character, it travels through the Spleen, Kidney, Heart meridians to tonify the spleen, astringe the kidney and calm the spirit. Pork lard lends further support to the chief action. Additionally, an appropriate amount of sugar-preserved osmanthus function as an assistant. Rock sugar (Bing-tang) serves as the envoy herb, harmonizing the whole, working to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and unite the separate actions into one. Collectively, the combination nourish qi and blood, strengthen the spleen and calm the mind, addressing the insomnia pattern.
