Rose blossoms (Mei-gui-hua) serve as the monarch (chief) herb. Sweet, slightly bitter-warm in property, its action follows the Liver, Spleen meridians, and works to regulate qi, relieve depression and activate blood. Cultivated rose blossoms take the deputy (minister) role, sweet, slightly bitter-warm in property, acting through the Liver, Spleen meridians to regulate qi and activate blood. Black tea (Hong-cha) functions as the harmonizing (envoy) ingredient, working to warm the middle and promote diuresis and unite the separate actions into one. Taken together these herbs promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, regulate qi and relieve pain, in keeping with the blood and qi pattern and its manifestations such as scanty flow, abdominal distension and pain.
