Morphological Characteristics
Body length is approximately 30 cm. The beak is thick and black. The nape, sides of the neck, upper back, chest, and abdomen are all pale grayish-white, while the remaining parts are black; the crown, the back of the head, and the inner coverts and flight feathers on the wings all have a purple sheen, while the remaining feathers shimmer with a greenish-blue iridescence. The sides of the head and body feathers are interspersed with fine white streaks.The breast feathers are conical and needle-like. Another all-black morph exists, with the entire body black except for white streaks on the sides of the head. The iris is blackish-brown; the tarsus, toes, feet, and claws are all black.

It is distributed throughout most of the country, but is less common in the south.
