20 grams of dried Houttuynia cordata, 30 grams of mulberry bark, 30 grams of loquat leaves, and 30 grams of honey.Main Ingredients
How To Make
First, sort the dried Houttuynia cordata to remove impurities, then wash it thoroughly. Place it in a clay pot and soak in clean water for 30 minutes. Next, finely chop the white mulberry bark and loquat leaves, place them in a muslin bag, tie the opening tightly, and add the bag to the clay pot along with the Houttuynia cordata. Add an appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove the herb bag, stir in the honey while the mixture is still warm, and mix thoroughly.

Commentary
Dried Houttuynia cordata (Yu-xing-cao) functions as the chief herb. Pungent-slightly cold in property, it travels through the Lung meridians, and works to clear lung heat, remove toxins and expel pus. Mulberry bark (Sang-bai-pi) stands in the deputy (minister) seat; cold and sweet in character, it travels through the Lung meridians to purge lung heat, relieve wheezing and reduce edema. Loquat leaves (Pi-pa-ye) add further support, working to clear lung heat, descend lung qi to stop cough, stop vomiting. Finally, honey (Feng-mi) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb; its role is to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. Collectively, the combination dispel wind and dispel cold, promote lung function and relieve cough, addressing the wind-heat and phlegm pattern responsible for a persistent, unproductive cough.
