Commentary
Taking black fungus (Mu-er) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its sweet flavor and neutral property: it travels through the Lung, Stomach, Liver, Large Intestine meridians and works to nourish blood, moisten dryness and stop bleeding. Brown sugar (Hong-tang) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb, working to warm the middle, activate blood and harmonize the formula and unite the separate actions into one. Collectively, the combination nourish and replenishes the blood, supplements iron, addressing the iron-deficiency anemia pattern.
