Commentary
Black fungus (Mu-er) act as the chief herb. Sweet-neutral in property, it travels through the Lung, Stomach, Liver, Large Intestine meridians, and works to nourish blood, moisten dryness and stop bleeding. Dong’e ejiao (Dong-e E-jiao) serves as the deputy herb; neutral and sweet in character, it travels through the Liver, Kidney, Lung meridians to nourish blood, stop bleeding and moisten the lung. Brown sugar (Hong-tang) rounds out the formula as the envoy herb, working to warm the middle, activate blood and harmonize the formula and moderate the overall properties. Collectively, the combination nourish and replenishes blood, increases platelet count, addressing the low platelet count purpura pattern.
