Commentary

Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Jiao-gu-lan) holds the chief position in this formula; cool and sweet, bitter in character, its action follows the Spleen, Lung, Kidney meridians, working chiefly to tonify qi, nourish yin and resolve phlegm and heat. Ginkgo leaves (Yin-xing-ye) serve as the deputy herb. Sweet, bitter, astringent-neutral in property, it enters the Heart, Lung meridians and works to activate blood and unblock the collaterals. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. The overall effect is to clear heat and resolve phlegm, tonify qi and clear turbidity, lower blood lipids, restoring balance within the dyslipidemia framework.
