Formula

30 grams of lotus seeds, 10 grams of Dong’e ejiao, and 100 grams of glutinous rice.

How To Make

Place the lotus seeds in a bowl and soak them in boiling water for a short while; remove the inner cores and set aside. Break the donkey-hide gelatin into pieces, grind it into a fine powder, add it to the bowl with the lotus seeds, mix thoroughly, and steam over water until cooked. Rinse the glutinous rice thoroughly, place it in a pot, add water, and bring to a boil. Stir in the steamed lotus seeds and donkey-hide gelatin; once the gelatin has dissolved, the dish is ready.

Efficacy

Nourishes qi and blood. Suitable for threatened miscarriage caused by deficiency of both qi and blood.

Usage

Take one dose in the morning and one in the evening.

Commentary

Lotus seeds (Lian-zi) hold the chief position in this formula; neutral and sweet, astringent in character, it enters the Spleen, Kidney, Heart meridians, working chiefly to tonify the spleen, astringe the kidney and calm the spirit. Dong’e ejiao (Dong-e E-jiao) serves as the deputy herb. Sweet-neutral in property, it enters the Liver, Kidney, Lung meridians and works to nourish blood, stop bleeding and moisten the lung. Glutinous rice (Nuo-mi) rounds out the formula as the harmonizing herb, working to tonify qi, warm the middle and stop diarrhea and moderate the overall properties. United, the ingredients nourish qi and blood, addressing the root disturbance of the blood and qi pattern.
