Commentary
Fresh Rehmannia root acts as the chief herb, providing the main thrust of the formula. Fresh Plantain leaves take the deputy (minister) role. Coix seed (Yi-yi-ren) complements it, working to clear damp-heat and strengthen the spleen. Additionally, slices of fresh ginger takes an assisting (adjuvant) role. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. Taken together these herbs clear heat and transforms dampness, in keeping with the damp-heat and heat pattern and its manifestations such as a flaccid penis, a damp scrotum (possibly accompanied by itching or pain).
