Commentary
Taking honeysuckle vine (Ren-dong-teng) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its sweet flavor and cold property: its action follows the Lung, Stomach, Large Intestine meridians and works to clear heat and remove toxins, unblock the meridians. Wild chrysanthemum (Ye-ju-hua) serves as the deputy herb, bitter, pungent-cold in property, acting through the Liver, Lung meridians to clear heat, remove toxins and pacify the liver. Chuanxiong (Chuan-xiong) complements it, working to activate blood, move qi, dispel wind and relieve pain. Honey (Feng-mi) rounds out the formula as the harmonizing herb, working to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and moderate the overall properties. Taken together these herbs clear heat and detoxify, cool the blood and promote blood circulation, in keeping with the hemorrhoids pattern.
