Drug Formulation

5 liang of fresh white gourd (seeds removed; steamed and sun-dried 9 times; ground separately into a fine powder as fine as dust), 5 liang of fresh Buddha’s Hand (stir-fried with a decoction of 3 qian of Silver Bupleurum, sliced, then steamed and sun-dried 9 times),5 liang of fresh citron (stir-fried with a decoction of 3 qian of Golden Bell Fruit, seeds removed, then steamed and sun-dried 9 times), 1 qian of authentic ginseng (ground separately to a fine powder as fine as dust), 10 liang of yellow soybean sprouts, 5 liang of roasted black jujube kernels, 5 liang of mulberry leaves harvested in winter frost, 5 liang of genuine Sichuan fritillary bulb (core removed), 5 liang of Jian-style Shenqu, and 5 liang of Jian-style lotus seed meat.

Processing

Mix the gourd powder thoroughly with the ginseng powder. Then, take approximately 4–5 liang of the powdered Sichuan fritillary bulb and lotus seed meat, gradually adding them to the gourd and ginseng mixture while grinding as you go, until the mixture is perfectly uniform; set aside. Grind the four ingredients—citron, Jian Shenqu, soybean sprouts, and mulberry leaves—along with the remaining Sichuan fritillary bulb and lotus seed meat into a fine powder; set aside.First, decoct the Buddha’s Hand and jujube seeds to produce a concentrated decoction of about one large noodle bowl’s worth, to be used for forming the pills. When forming the pills, remove the seeds from the remaining herbs; once the mixture is half-formed, add the ginseng powder and other powders, then add the remaining herbs and continue forming until the pills are complete. Sun-dry and store them; it is advisable to line the bottom of the storage container with paper covered in mine ash to prevent mold.After rolling the herbal powder, roll the glutinous rice in the remaining decoction to prevent the powder from falling off. Each batch of these dry pills yields approximately 30 liang.

Instructions for Use

Take 1 qian per dose, for a total of approximately 300 doses. For liver qi pain, take with Xiangfu Decoction; for stomach qi pain, take with Muxiang Decoction; for beriberi, take with Mugua Decoction; for bloating, take with Chenmai Chai Decoction.
