Drug Formulation

9 liang of realgar (preferably ground with water; grinding by hand is also acceptable. Be sure to select bright, lustrous specimens).

Source

From *Ji Feng*, Volume 28.

Processing

Place the above ingredients in a small sand box, packing them level and firm; add 6 liang of honey, pouring it over the realgar until it is completely covered; use 6 pieces of Fangfeng, cut to fit the length of the box; cover the top securely with a lid.Take 6 jin of clay and 4 liang of rock salt; mix with water to form a paste, then add paper pulp (adjust the amount as needed). Once the paste is soft and pliable, roll it into ropes, crisscross and wrap them tightly, then encase the bundle in a clay bowl. Let it cure in the shade for 7 days, then place it in a sieve in a well-ventilated area until it is 10 parts dry;Build a furnace on the ground, 1 chi 5 cun deep and 1 chi 2 cun wide. Place the elixir box inside, cover it with 1 dou of fine mulberry wood ash (if unavailable, use pine wood ash) until level, and top with 20 jin of hard charcoal. Burn it in five cycles, then let it rest for one fu-shi (gradually add charcoal to ensure even heat;it is acceptable to add more charcoal if it runs low, but do not overdo it). Remove the box and break it open; a bluish-green color is considered the best, followed by purple and red. Wrap the powder in oiled cloth and suspend it in a well, 1 chi above the water level. Leave it suspended for one fu, then remove it, grind it to a very fine powder, and form it into pills using wine paste, each the size of a paulownia seed.
