Ointment for Phlegm Nodules and Scrofula

Chinese Name : 痰核瘰疬膏
Drug Formulation
1 set of cat skull, teeth, and claws (calcined over fire to preserve their properties), 5 qian of dung beetle (roasted), 5 qian of magnetite (calcined with vinegar), 1 qian of frankincense, 1 qian of myrrh (oil removed), 5 qian of raw alum (calcined inside the shell of a male pig’s foot and claws to preserve its properties), 1 liang of seaweed, 1 liang of large fritillary bulb, and 5 qian of castor bean pulp.

Processing
Use 4 liang of sesame oil and simmer it with the three ingredients—sesame oil, large fritillary bulb, and castor seeds—until the mixture does not disperse when a drop is placed in water. Strain out the residue, add frankincense and myrrh, and simmer again. When the mixture thickens, remove from heat. While still boiling hot, add the cat skull, dung beetle, magnetite, and powdered alum, stirring thoroughly. Simmer in cold water to remove any residual heat, then remove while still soft and shape into strips.

Instructions for Use
Apply as a poultice when needed. Whenever adding fine powders after straining out the residue, use Qingzhou cinnabar and add a small amount of colophony and beeswax. Adjust the consistency to the appropriate softness before incorporating the powdered cat’s head and other ingredients; this ensures the mixture forms a smooth paste. If the swelling has already ruptured, add dust collected from the beam of a public restroom. For swellings that have not yet ruptured, applying this poultice will cause them to dissipate immediately.
