Drug Formulation

4 liang of orpiment (water-floated), 1 liang of rock salt (ground separately), 1 jin of white sand honey, 8 chebulic myrobalan fruits (pitted and ground into powder), 3 qian of cuttlefish bone(grind into powder; boil the honey several times; skim off the wax layer with clean paper; then add the orpiment, stir well with a stick; gradually add the remaining herbs; remove from heat when it turns purple), Coptis rhizome 10 liang, Euphorbia seed half a liang, Equisetum herb 1 liang, Gentiana root 2 liang, Apricot kernels 75 (remove skins and tips).

Processing

Place the five herbs, including Coptis, into a porcelain vessel and soak them in 1 dou of water. Soak for 5 days in spring and autumn, 3 days in summer, and 10 days in winter. Transfer the mixture to a pot and simmer over alternating high and low heat until reduced to slightly less than half a jin. Strain out the residue, then simmer in a double boiler until it forms a paste. Add the previously prepared herbs and simmer, stirring until the mixture turns purple. Finally, add 1 qian of borneol.
