One large handful of large oak branches (1 chi in length, washed clean), 5 cun of licorice root (cut into 1-cun pieces).

Instructions for Use

Place the ingredients in a new sand bottle with 3.5 sheng of freshly drawn water, seal tightly with three layers of paper, and simmer over moderate heat until reduced to 1.5 sheng. When severe pain in the lower back and abdomen sets in and the woman is ready to sit on the birthing mat, drink one small cup while warm; she will immediately feel a sense of relief beneath the heart. If thirsty, drink another cup; after 3–4 cups, she will feel a heavy pressure below and the baby will be born.

Under no circumstances should one seek the midwife’s assistance too early, nor should the midwife act recklessly.
