Drug Formulation

Half a liang of realgar (finely ground), 2 liang of sulfur (finely ground), half a liang of cinnabar (finely ground), 1 liang of ghost arrow feathers, 1 liang of rhinoceros horn shavings, 1 liang of side seeds (raw, with skin and pith removed), 1 liang of antelope horn shavings, 1 liang of deer antler gelatin, 1 liang of aconite root (raw, with skin and pith removed),1 liang Rhododendron, 1 liang Sichuan Aconite (raw, with skin and pith removed), 1 liang Wood Fragrance, 1 liang Chinese Stephania, 1 liang Achyranthes (stems removed), 1 liang Asarum, 6 liang tiger shin bone, 5 liang Dendrobium (roots removed), 5 liang decayed turtle shell,Acorus rhizome 5 liang, prepared dried Rehmannia root 1 liang, glehnia root (with root tip removed) 1 liang, Dioscorea root 1 liang, Morinda root 1 liang, Ligusticum root 1 liang, Dipsacus root 1 liang, Acorus calamus 1 liang, Angelica root 1 liang, Gentiana root (with stem removed) 1 liang,1 liang of Dog’s-spine, 1 liang of Smilax glabra, 1 liang of Aglaia odorata, 1 liang of White Clematis, 1 liang of Cinnamon Bark, 1 liang of Eucommia (with coarse bark removed), 1 liang of Sichuan Pepper (seeds removed), and 1 liang of Aconite (raw, with skin and pith removed).

Processing

Finely chop the ingredients. Place 6 jin of refined lard from the twelfth lunar month in a cauldron along with the herbs, and simmer over low heat from morning until noon. Wait until the medicinal properties are fully extracted. Strain out the residue using fresh cloth, then filter again through cotton. Wipe the cauldron clean, refine the mixture once more, then add sulfur, realgar, cinnabar, and other ingredients. Stir thoroughly with a willow wood spatula until uniform. Allow to solidify, then store in a porcelain container.

Instructions for Use

Wherever there is pain, first rub the ointment into the affected area 200–300 times, then apply the ointment to a piece of clean cloth and apply it as a poultice. If there is wind-toxin present internally, take a dose the size of a marble on an empty stomach, washed down with warm wine.
