Drug Formulation

Southern Frankincense (unroasted), areca nut, hemp seed, and trichosanthes peel—each in equal parts.

From *Shenghui*, cited in Volume 1 of *Xiu Zhen*.

Processing

First, remove the pith from the Zhi Ke and cut each piece into 4 slices. Use a 3-cun piece of unwormed soapberry,5 slices of fresh ginger, and 3 seeds of croton (lightly crushed, with shells intact), add 1 zhan of water, and boil the Zhi Ke until it comes to a rolling boil. Strain out the ginger, croton seeds, and soapberry; discard them. Finely grind the Zhi Ke, dry it in an oven, and reduce it to a fine powder. Combine this with the previously prepared Southern Frankincense, areca nut, and hemp seed, grind them all into a fine powder, and mix with refined honey to form pills.
