Drug Formulation

2.5 jin of rosin, 2.5 jin of bitumen, 1 jin of sesame oil (adjust quantities as needed).

Processing

First, fry the ingredients in sesame oil until cooked. Next, add rosin and asphalt, and simmer over low heat using firewood, stirring constantly with willow twigs. Continue until the foam subsides; stop when the mixture becomes as clear and bright as oil. Test to ensure the consistency is just right, then strain through a cloth into a basin of water to remove the dregs. Have several people work together to pull and stretch the mixture until it turns white and floats on the water’s surface. Then soak it in water until ready to be decocted with the following herbs: 2.5 qian of Tianhuafen,Fritillaria 2.5 qian, Coptis 2.5 qian, Aconite 2.5 qian, Phellodendron 2.5 qian, Rhubarb 2.5 qian, Red Cinnabar 2.5 qian, Asarum 2.5 qian, Anemarrhena 5 qian, Clematis 5 qian, Pinellia 5 qian, Bletilla 5 qian, Myrrh 5 qian, Apricot Kernel 5 qian, Verbena 5 qian,2 liang of Angelica dahurica, 4 liang of Dehuo, 1 liang of tender peach twigs, 1 liang of tender willow twigs, 1 liang of tender locust twigs—use only those harvested in the spring months.Soak them in 7–8 bowls of spring water; steep for 6 days in winter and 2 days in summer. Strain out the residue, retaining the clear liquid. Re-decoct the residue to extract another clear liquid. Combine both clear liquids with pine resin, asphalt, and the flesh of the “gaozi” fruit, and decoct until the mixture is 7–8 parts dry. Then add half a bowl each of ginger juice and scallion juice, a little less than half a bowl of rice vinegar, 49 seeds of croton,49 castor seeds—all ground into a powder—and simmer until the mixture is 10 parts dry. Then add the following 21 ingredients: 3 qian of Wood Fragrance, 3 qian of Agarwood, 3 qian of Dragon’s Blood, 3 qian of Chinese Angelica, 3 qian of Achyranthes Root,Rhinoceros Horn 3 qian, Myrrh 3 qian, Gastrodia 3 qian, Tiger Bone (fried in butter) 3 qian, Aquilaria 3 qian, Puffball 3 qian, White Tiger Snake (or Black-striped Snake, fried in wine) 3 qian,Southern Pinellia 5 qian, Raw Rehmannia 5 qian, Cassia Bark 5 qian, Five-Spirit Fat (roasted) 5 qian, Frankincense 5 qian, Trichosanthes Seed 5 qian, Natural Copper (calcined and quenched in vinegar) 5 qian, Acanthopanax Bark 1 liang, Bee Hive 7.5 qian. Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, sprinkle it gradually into the previous paste, stir thoroughly, remove from heat, add 2.5 qian of Musk, and stir again until uniform.Store in porcelain containers.

For unbroken sores, cut out a small hole in the center of the patch and apply it.
