Drug Formulation

4 liang of Angelica sinensis, 4 liang of Angelica dahurica, 4 liang of Polygonum cuspidatum, 25 pangolins, 120 grains of croton seeds (ground), 120 grains of castor beans (ground), 21 soft-shelled turtles (shells removed), 1 jin of sesame oil,10 liang of realgar (water-floated and stir-fried), 4 qian of frankincense, 4 qian of myrrh, 4 qian of mercury oxide, 4 qian of dragon’s blood, and 4 qian of musk.

Processing

Grind the pointed ends and other ingredients into small pieces, then soak them in 1 jin of sesame oil.for 5 days in spring, 3 days in summer, 7 days in fall, and 10 days in winter. Simmer in a pot until the Angelica dahurica turns a charred color, then remove the pot and let it cool to room temperature. Filter out the residue using raw silk, then simmer again over alternating high and low heat. Add the orpiment and stir continuously with peach and willow twigs until the mixture does not disperse when a drop of water is added—neither too hard nor too soft. Add 5 liang of pine resin, stir evenly, remove from the pot, and let cool. Then add the mercury oxide,musk, dragon’s blood, frankincense, and myrrh, and stir until well blended.

Instructions for Use

To apply, warm your hands over a fire and press them onto the plaster more than 100 times; this induces sweating remarkably well. For dysentery and constipation or diarrhea, apply to the center of the navel; for cough and wheezing, apply to the Lung Shu acupoint.
