Commentary
1. Chuanxiong (chuān xiōng) enters the Liver, Gallbladder, and Pericardium meridians. It promotes blood circulation and the flow of qi, dispels wind, and relieves pain; it is known as the “herb that regulates qi within the blood.” It ascends to the head and eyes, effectively treating various types of pain in the head and face, unblocking the flow of qi and blood in the head, and relieving headaches caused by vascular spasms.
2. Angelica dahurica (bái zhǐ) enters the Lung, Stomach, and Large Intestine meridians. It relieves exterior syndromes and dispels cold, dispels wind and alleviates pain, opens the nasal passages, dries dampness, and expels pus. It specifically targets the Yangming meridian and is particularly effective for pain along the brow ridge, forehead headaches, nasal congestion, and runny nose.
Formulation Logic: Angelica dahurica dispels wind-cold and opens the nasal passages; Chuanxiong promotes the circulation of qi and blood and relieves headaches. When combined, they dispel wind pathogens and unblock the meridians, simultaneously alleviating head and facial pain and nasal congestion. Honey tonifies the middle burner and moistens dryness, moderating the pungent, warm, and drying nature of Chuanxiong and Angelica dahurica, protecting the stomach, and harmonizing the flavors of the herbs.
