Commentary
Goji berries (Gou-qi-zi) function as the chief herb. Sweet-neutral in property, it channels into the Liver, Kidney meridians, and works to nourish the liver and kidney, brighten the eyes. White chrysanthemum flowers (Ju-hua) act as the deputy ingredient, sweet, bitter-slightly cold in property, acting through the Lung, Liver meridians to clear liver heat, pacify the liver and brighten the eyes. Lotus seeds (Lian-zi) add further support, working to tonify the spleen, astringe the kidney and calm the spirit. Assisting the core, kuding tea (Ku-ding-cha) functions as an assistant, helping to clear heat, detoxify, promote diuresis and lower lipid. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. The overall effect is to nourish yin and tonify the kidneys, restoring balance within the yin deficiency and yin framework.
