Commentary
Fresh hawthorn (Shan-zha) serves as the monarch (chief) herb; slightly warm and sour, sweet in character, its action follows the Spleen, Stomach, Liver meridians, working chiefly to dissolve food stagnation and activate blood. Chinese yam (Shan-yao) stands in the deputy (minister) seat. Sweet-neutral in property, it enters the Spleen, Lung, Kidney meridians and works to tonify the spleen and lung, nourish the kidney and astringe essence. Wet starch lends further support to the chief action. Additionally, salt and chicken bouillon to taste adds as an assistant element. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. In sum, the prescription strengthen the spleen and aid digestion, aimed squarely at the pediatric malnutrition pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
