Commentary

Bee pollen (Hua-fen) holds the chief position in this formula; neutral and sweet in character, it channels into the Spleen, Lung meridians, working chiefly to tonify qi and nourish. Kudzu root (Ge-gen) takes the deputy (minister) role; cool and sweet, pungent in character, it travels through the Spleen, Stomach meridians to releases the exterior, generate fluids, raise yang and stop diarrhea. Celery (Qin-cai) adds further support, working to clear heat, calm the liver and promote urination. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. Working as one, the formula clear heat and relieve restlessness, promote fluid production and quenches thirst, lower blood sugar, thereby targeting the diabetes pattern that underlies the complaint.
