Commentary
Taking rose pollen (Mei-gui-hua-fen) as the leading herb, the formula draws on its sweet flavor and warm property: its action follows the Liver, Spleen meridians and works to regulate qi and activate blood. Walnut kernels (He-tao-ren) join as the supporting deputy. Sweet-warm in property, it enters the Kidney, Lung, Large Intestine meridians and works to tonify the kidney, warm the lung and moisten the intestines. Jujubes (Da-zao) function as the harmonizing (envoy) ingredient, working to tonify qi, nourish blood and calm the spirit, harmonize the formula and unite the separate actions into one. Collectively, the combination relieve liver stagnation and regulate qi, addressing the qi pattern responsible for liver stagnation and qi stagnation.
