Commentary

Fresh Eupatorium fortunei holds the chief position in this formula, anchoring the herbal tea formula overall action. Fresh purslane (Ma-chi-xian) fills the deputy position, sour-cold in property, acting through the Liver, Large Intestine meridians to clear heat and cool blood. Fresh verbena (Ma-bian-cao) reinforces this deputy action, working to activate blood, resolve stasis and remove toxins. Finally, honey (Feng-mi) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb; its role is to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. United, the ingredients clear liver heat and purge heat, addressing the root disturbance of the heat pattern.
