Morphological Characteristics
Truncate-calyx sage, a perennial herb. Stems are erect, 40–80 cm tall. Possesses a stout rhizome densely covered with ovate-lanceolate brown scales.Leaves are opposite; petioles are 3–25 cm long; leaf blades are cordate or ovate-lanceolate, 4–18 cm long and 3.5–13.5 cm wide, with irregular, double-serrate margins; both surfaces are nearly glabrous, except for the upper surface veins, which are more or less densely pubescent, and the margins, which bear cilia.The inflorescence is a verticillate corymb, consisting of 2–6 flowers; the bracts are ovate, with an acuminate or acute apex; the calyx is campanulate, shallowly 2-lobed or nearly truncate; the corolla is yellow, with a tube approximately 2 cm long and a bilabiate crown—the upper lip is ovate and slightly domed, while the lower lip is obliquely spreading and 3-lobed, with the middle lobe ob-cordate;fertile stamens extend to the upper lip, slightly protruding or not protruding at all; filaments are filiform; the style extends slightly beyond the corolla, with the apex unequally and shallowly bifid. The nutlets are oblong-obovate, brown and smooth, glabrous. Flowering period: July–September.
