Processing

Grind the calcined gypsum and alum into a fine powder, mix with the mercury, and pour the mixture into a small iron pot, stirring well. Simmer the pot over a charcoal fire, stirring with a fine iron rod until the mixture slowly melts; then remove it from the heat (this process is called “forming the embryo”).Place a large porcelain bowl inside the small iron pot. Roll mulberry bark paper into thick strips, moisten them with water, and pack them tightly around the rim of the bowl. Cover the top with sand, leaving only the bottom of the bowl exposed. Place a piece of Tongcao on top and weigh it down with a small copper coin. Place the pot on a charcoal stove and heat it over a moderate, even flame until the Tongcao on the bottom of the bowl turns yellow. Remove the pot from the heat, allow it to cool, remove the sand, lift the lid of the large bowl, scrape off the Huangsheng Dan with a small knife, place it in a bottle, and grind it into a fine powder for use.
