Processing

Place the oil in a porcelain, copper, or iron cauldron, soak the herbs in it overnight, and simmer over low heat until the mixture turns black. Filter out the residue using raw silk cloth, retaining 1 liang of medicinal oil. Return the filtered oil to low heat and simmer again. Add the yellow丹 to the oil and stir continuously with a long willow twig.until a faint smoke rises. Immediately lift the cauldron and, using the willow twig, dip it into the medicinal oil and drip it onto the surface of water; if it coagulates into a bead that does not disperse, the ointment is complete. If the oil disperses and fails to form beads, continue simmering until it becomes a paste. Remove the cauldron from the heat and stir until no smoke is emitted. Then add frankincense and myrrh, stir until well blended, and pour the mixture into a porcelain container. Wash the cauldron with the reserved oil and add the washings to the container. Change the freshly drawn water once a day and leave the container submerged in water for three days to remove toxins before use.If the ointment is too hard, add an appropriate amount of beeswax and clear oil to the ointment and stir until well blended.
