Processing

First, mix 1 sheng of wine with 5 sheng of water to make a decoction; wash the aromatic ingredients thoroughly and chop them;then soak them in 1 sheng each of wine and water overnight. The next morning, place them in 1 dou 5 sheng of black sesame oil and simmer over low heat, bringing the mixture to a boil and then lowering the heat three times. Strain out the residue and transfer the liquid to a single-mouth bottle, leaving it slightly less than full. Then take: 3 jin of high-grade agarwood, 3 liang of sparrow-head incense, 3 liang of suhe incense, 5 liang of white gum resin, 5 liang of white sandalwood, 1 liang of cloves,1 liang of musk, and 1 liang of jiaxiang. For these eight ingredients, first mix the wine and water to make a solution, wash the incense thoroughly, and crush each separately—but not too finely. Mix the incense with 2 sheng of honey and 1 sheng of wine, then pack it tightly into the porcelain bottle mentioned above. Wrap the bottle’s mouth with cotton, and further secure it with crisscrossed bamboo strips to prevent the incense from escaping.First, dig a hole in the ground and bury the oil jar so that its mouth is level with the ground. Place the incense jar on top of the oil jar, aligning the two openings.Seal the rims of both jars with a mixture of hemp and mud, making the seal tight and secure; the layer should be about half a cun thick. Pile rice bran on top of the jars to a depth of 5 cun, then set them on fire. As the fire begins to die down, immediately add more rice bran. Maintain the fire continuously for three days and three nights; do not let the fire go out. Use a total of 12 shi of rice bran. Afterward, let it sit for three days to cool, then remove the contents. Separately, melt 8 jin of beeswax and boil it several times.add 12 liang of purple grass, and simmer for several dozen boils. Take a single stalk of purple grass and rub it against your fingernail to test; if the pith appears white, remove it. Filter the mixture through cotton, then combine it with the previous decoction until well blended. Add 6 liang of cinnabar powder and stir until fully incorporated. While it is still slightly warm but not yet set, pour it into a bamboo tube, wrap the tube in paper, and bind it with hemp. Once it has solidified and cooled, unwrap it and use as desired. This method yields approximately 50 sticks.
