Core TCM pathogenesis of dull complexion:
1.Kidney Essence (Jing) Deficiency (most typically manifested as dark and dull complexion)
The Kidney governs the color black. When Kidney Jing (essence) and Kidney Yang are deficient, the inherent color manifests on the face.
Manifestations: Dull and sallow complexion with a lack of luster, accompanied by soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees, aversion to cold/hot flashes, hair loss, tinnitus, frequent nocturia, and mental fatigue; commonly seen in cases of excessive late nights and sexual indulgence, or chronic wellness depleting Kidney Jing.
2. Blood Stasis Obstruction Internally (dull complexion with bluish-gray hue, pigmented spots)
Qi and blood circulation is stagnated, facial meridians are obstructed, and Qi and blood cannot nourish the skin.
Manifestations: Dull and cyanotic complexion, darkened lips, dark circles under the eyes, chloasma on the skin, dysmenorrhea with blood clots, fixed stabbing pain in the body; more likely to occur in cases of long-term Qi Stagnation, exposure to cold, after surgery, or in individuals with chronic wellness.
3. Spleen Deficiency with Damp-Turbidity Ascending (manifesting as yellowish, turbid, and dull complexion)
The Spleen’s ability to transform and transport is weakened, leading to the steaming of phlegm-dampness turbid pathogens on the face and the failure of clear Yang to ascend, which supports the body’s normal transportation and transformation functions and helps maintain a balanced internal environment.
Manifestations: Sallow, dull, and oily complexion, edema, lackluster appearance, fatigue, abdominal distension, sticky stools, poor appetite, and a tendency toward flaccid obesity; commonly seen in individuals with a sedentary lifestyle, overeating habits, or weak Spleen and Stomach function.
4. Liver Qi Stagnation (dull complexion with bluish hue)
Liver Qi Stagnation, with obstruction of Qi movement, helps maintain Qi and blood from reaching the head and face.
Manifestations: Dull complexion on the cheeks, low mood with irritability, chest oppression with sighing, insomnia, distending pain in both hypochondriac regions; commonly occurs in individuals with long-term stress, anxiety, or frequent late nights.
5.Qi and Blood Dual Deficiency (dull and lackluster, pale and grayish in appearance)
Deficiency of Qi and blood leads to inadequate nourishment of the face, resulting not in a dark complexion but rather a pale and dull appearance.
Manifestations: pale and dull complexion, pale lips, palpitations and shortness of breath, easy fatigue, scanty menstrual flow, dizziness.
6. Cold pathogen, depletion from prolonged wellness
Prolonged aversion to cold and exposure to cold conditions leads to cold congealing Qi and blood; in the advanced stage of chronic severe wellness, vital Qi declines, resulting in an overall dull and withered complexion, which indicates a poor prognosis.
Operational Method:
The patient is in the dorsal recumbent position.
1. The practitioner uses the thenar eminence to perform rubbing manipulation (Mo Fa) along the medial aspect of the patient’s lower limb for 5 to 10 repetitions.
2. Press and knead Sanyinjiao (SP6) and Liangqiu (ST34) for 30 seconds each.
3. Overlap both palms on the abdomen and perform clockwise circular rubbing (Rubbing Method (Mo Fa)).
Press and stimulate CV12 (Zhongwan), ST25 (Tianshu), CV6 (Qihai), and CV4 (Guanyuan) for 30 seconds each.
5. Simultaneously press and stimulate Neiguan (PC6) and ST36 (Zusanli) for half a minute.
The patient is in the prone position.
1. Rub Yongquan (KI1) until a sensation of warmth is felt.
2. Perform pushing manipulation along the Bladder Meridian (BL) pathway on the back for 3 to 5 times.
3. Apply the rolling (Gun) technique to the lumbar region.
4. Press and knead BL15 (Xinshu), BL18 (Ganshu), BL20 (Pishu), BL21 (Weishu), and BL23 (Shenshu) acupoints. Finally, combine with facial beauty manipulation methods.
Interesting perspective! I’ve always wondered why some people get that dark, dull complexion no matter how much they sleep. The kidney essence connection makes sense—never thought about it that way. Do you have specific massage techniques for stimulating Kidney Jing? Would love to try something simple at home.
顔のくすみは腎虚が原因なんですね!東洋医学の視点は面白い。マッサージでツボを刺激すると血行が良くなって、肌色が明るくなる気がします。記事、参考になりました。ありがとうございます!
This is super interesting! I’ve been struggling with a dull complexion lately, and I never thought about it being linked to Kidney essence. Definitely going to try incorporating some facial massage into my routine. Thanks for sharing these TCM insights!
顔のくすみが気になっていましたが、東洋医学の視点から見ると腎の精不足が原因なんですね!マッサージで血行を良くするのも大事ですが、根本的なアプローチを知ると納得です。試してみます✨
