Drug Formulation

Tussilago flower (remove the inner husk enclosing the stamens, the inner core, and all stems and leaves; soak in licorice water overnight; then steam together with Tussilago leaves overnight and sun-dry) 1 liang 5 qian; White薇 (soak in glutinous rice washwater overnight; remove, chop finely on a locust wood chopping block, steam, and sun-dry from the hour of Shen to the hour of Si)1 liang 1 qian, Lily Bulb (thoroughly moistened with Huai Sheng Di Huang juice, steamed for half an incense stick’s duration, then sun-dried) 6 qian, Anemarrhena Rhizome (finely chopped on a locust wood cutting board, then pounded in a dry wooden mortar) 6 qian, Lycium Bark (washed with east-flowing water to remove soil, pounded to remove the core, soaked in licorice decoction overnight, then baked dry) 1 liang,Peach kernels (moistened with hot water, skinned, then boiled with Atractylodes macrocephala and black soybeans in east-flowing water until the center turns golden yellow; remove and pound) 81 pieces, Scrophularia root (placed in a steamer with layers of cattail reeds separating the ingredients, steamed for two “fu” periods, then sun-dried;then mixed with Cuscuta seed powder and steamed for 3 incense sticks’ worth of time; remove the Cuscuta seeds, sun-dry, and pound in a wooden mortar) 6 qian,Shan Shen (authentic varieties, mostly from Liaoning Province; resembling both ginseng and Fangfeng, slender and yellowish-white, solid with a core—the core is yellow and the flesh white; mix with Ziwan and steam for one incense stick’s duration; remove the Ziwan, sun-dry, and chop into small pieces) 7 qian,Cistanche (soak in wine overnight until morning; use a palm-leaf brush to remove sand, soil, and floating scales; split open the center to remove the white membrane; select specimens resembling bamboo fibers, place in a steamer, and steam from noon until sunset; then roast thoroughly with butter) 6 qian,Softshell Turtle Carapace (select those with nine ribs; wash off the skin and flesh; boil thoroughly in strong vinegar; roast over willow wood fire until golden and crisp) 1 liang, Sichuan Lacquer Tree (remove the root just before use; mix with powdered licorice moistened with water and steam; remove the licorice, sun-dry, and crush; then mix again with licorice and steam) 6 qian, Ginseng (steam on top of cooked rice; sun-dry 3–5 times) 5 qian,Fragrant Black Bean Paste 1 he (prepared according to standard methods), Black Plum 1 he (soaked to remove the pit, then steamed until soft while buried in rice), Yin Zhou Bupleurum (remove the root tip and peel off a small amount of the thin yellow skin) 1 liang, Cimicifuga (peel off the coarse outer bark, soak in Polygonatum juice overnight, sun-dry, chop, and steam) 1 liang,Cinnamon Bark (remove inner and outer bark; use only the core) 5 qian; Changshan (remove the shoot just before use; mix with powdered licorice moistened with water and steam; remove the licorice, chop finely, then moisten with wine overnight) 1 liang; Qianhu (peel off the dark-gray bark and root tip; chop finely; soak in sweet bamboo sap until moist; sun-dry) 1 liang;Sea Cuttlefish (boil in blood brine for one fu; remove; dig a hole in clean, elevated ground; heat charcoal until red-hot; after a short pause, place the cuttlefish in the hole and spread it out; cover with a tile; remove the next morning; mix with 10 sparrow eggs; sun-dry until completely dry) 1 liang 7 qian,Ru (i.e., the root of Polygonum aviculare; do not use the root of Salix rubra, which resembles it in appearance but has a sour and astringent taste—accidental ingestion may cause cataracts. Remove a thin layer of the outer skin. Take a very large crucian carp, remove its intestines, place the Ru inside its abdomen, and steam until the fish is cooked. Remove and sun-dry. Repeat this process with a new fish, following the same steaming and sun-drying method, for a total of 7 times. Finely chop)1 liang 7 qian.
