Drug Formulation

5 jin of Ephedra (roots and nodes removed), 1 jin of white flower snake meat, 1 jin of black snake meat, 1 liang of croton seed (remove skin and core, grind into a paste; combine with the previous three ingredients in a cauldron with 1 shi of water, gradually adding water as it boils. As the water evaporates, replenish with hot broth. When the volume has doubled—by which time 3–4 dou of hot water have been added—strain thoroughly to remove the ephedra and snakes; filter the decoction through clean raw silk, then return it to the pot and simmer over low heat until it reaches the desired consistency. Transfer to a clean vessel, then add the following ingredients: 1 liang of sulfur (ground with a few drops of raw licorice water for one fu period), 1 liang of realgar (dissolved in slurry water to remove impurities, then boiled dry in a small pot),1 liang of dried scorpion (roasted in a porcelain box until brown), 1 liang of cinnamon bark, 1 liang of aconite root (roasted until cracked, with skin and pith removed), 1 liang of saposhnikovia root (with root tip removed), 1 liang of gastrodia tuber, 1 liang of agarwood, 1 liang of notopterygium root, 1 liang of pinellia tuber (roasted until cracked),Aconite Rhizome 1 liang (roasted until cracked, with skin and pith removed), Antelope Horn Shavings 1 liang, Areca Nut 1 liang, White Silkworm Pupae 1 liang (lightly roasted), Angelica Root 1 liang (chopped, lightly roasted), Ox Bile 0.5 liang (finely ground), Rhinoceros Horn Shavings 1 liang, White Borneol 0.5 liang (finely ground), Musk 0.5 liang (finely ground).

Processing

Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Add the finely ground herbs and grind again until uniform. Mix with the decoction of Ephedra to form pills the size of a Paulownia seed.

Take 1 pill at a time, chewed and washed down with soybean-infused wine, at any time of day.
