Drug Formulation

Myrrh 1 qian, Angelica sinensis and Rheum palmatum 1 liang each, Pharbitis nil 2 liang, mercuric oxide 1 qian, Cinnamomum cassia 1 fen (grind the above ingredients together into a powder), realgar 1 qian (grind together).

Processing

Grind the ingredients into a fine powder; form into pills the size of small beans using vinegar paste.

Benefits

For postpartum retention of lochia, absence of menstruation, and sharp, cramping pain in the lower back and abdomen; or for all cases of accumulated intestinal waste causing a hard, full sensation, distension, and pain that comes and goes; or for dry heat with sudden thirst, shortness of breath, confusion, and pain and fatigue in the limbs; or for sudden abdominal pain in adults and children.

Instructions for Use

Take 5–10 pills per dose, taken warm to induce a rapid and thorough bowel movement to eliminate the accumulation; stop once the stool has passed. If the condition has not fully resolved after the bowel movement, repeat the dose to induce another bowel movement. To relieve acute pain in the chest and abdomen, take the pills with a decoction of frankincense and induce a bowel movement.

Note

Pregnant women who are already experiencing spontaneous diarrhea or excessive expulsion of foul matter should not take this formula; in cases of extreme dry heat or blood depletion, do not force administration; instead, regulate the qi and nourish the blood.
