Drug Formulation

2 liang of frankincense, 2 liang of Dipsacus asper, 2 liang of Angelica sinensis, 1 liang of cinnamon bark, 2 liang of unprocessed hair (burned to ash), 4 liang of distilled agarwood oil, 2 liang of qilin blood, 2 liang of agarwood, 1 liang of belladonna seeds, 7 liang of sesame oil, 4 liang of orpiment, and 4 liang of pork lard (from the twelfth lunar month).

Processing

Grind all the above ingredients—except for the sesame oil, lard, and orpiment—into a fine powder. First, simmer the oils and fats until fully rendered; set aside to cool. Add the powdered herbs and stir thoroughly with a willow wood spatula. Simmer over low heat for another half day, then add the orpiment and stir until evenly mixed. Adjust the consistency to form a salve and store in a porcelain jar.

Apply by spreading the ointment onto a piece of white, boiled silk.
