Formulas Name : Soft Red Pills

Chinese Name : 软红丸

Drug Formulation

7 seeds of croton, 3 pieces of Coptis (each the size of a croton seed).

Source

From *Wei’s Family Prescriptions*, Volume 9.

Processing

Boil the above ingredients together until they come to a boil once; remove the Coptis, then take out the Croton seeds (remove the shells and peel off the inner membrane). Wrap them in paper and press them against a tile to remove the oil until they are perfectly clean and powdery. Use 1 qian of Guo Dan,First, place the croton seeds in a mortar and add a small amount of Guo Dan; grind them together until fine. Only then add the remaining Guo Dan and grind again. It must be ground to a very fine powder; otherwise, the mixture will be uneven, and the effect upon ingestion may vary unpredictably. Then take a piece of beeswax about the size of a thumb—a slightly larger amount is acceptable—and melt it in a teacup, skimming off the black residue until the liquid is clear. Gradually stir in the ground castor beans and Guo Dan, then simmer over heat while stirring frequently to ensure even mixing. When the Guo Dan turns a faint reddish color, remove the mixture, knead it into a block, and set it aside. Roll it into pills the size of mung beans.
