Drug Formulation

Authentic Acanthopanax Bark (washed) 1 jin 8 liang, Pig’s-Tooth Soapberry (shelled) 1 jin 8 liang, Mao Mountain Atractylodes 1 jin (washed in rice washing water, sun-dried), Ephedra (roots and nodes removed) 5 jin, Purple-backed Duckweed 2 jin(Sun-dried and steamed over water. Take the above five ingredients, add one bucket of running water to a clay pot, and decoct until reduced by half; then add more water and decoct again. Repeat this process 3–4 times, strain through fine silk, and boil down to a paste. Add the following powdered ingredients): Sichuan Aconite (boiled with black beans) 1 liang, Strychnos nux-vomica (oil removed) 1 liang,Horn Agarwood (black variety) 1 liang, Guangxi Frankincense (unburned) 1 liang, Genuine Dragon’s Blood (pale red) 1 liang, Drip Frankincense (roasted) 1 liang, Tianma (large) 1 liang, Pinellia (roasted with vinegar 3 times) 1 liang, Notopterygium (washed) 1 liang 5 qian, Schizonepeta Spikes 1 liang 3 qian, Saposhnikovia (washed to remove soil, stem removed)1 liang 3 qian, Brocade-Patterned Rhubarb (large chunks, moist) 1 liang 3 qian, White Silkworm (removed from silk, mouthparts, and legs) 1 liang 2 qian, Sichuan Gan Song (soil removed) 7 qian, Xanthium Seeds (soil removed, roasted) 7 qian, Angelica Dahurica Tips (washed) 7 qian, Genuine Myrrh (ground separately) 7 qian, White Tribulus (thorns removed) 7 qian,Turmeric 7 qian, Sichuan Angelica (root removed, washed with wine) 7 qian, Soapberry Thorns (tips and woody parts removed) 7 qian, Genuine Musk from the Dangmen Region 3 qian, Great Wind Seeds (shells and oil removed) 5 qian, Burdock Seeds 5 qian.

Processing

Grind each of the above ingredients into an extremely fine powder, mix them into the ointment base, and knead thoroughly to form pills the size of a marble. Take 4 pills per dose. Coat each pill first with cinnabar suspended in water, then with a sheet of gold leaf. Dry in the shade; do not expose to fire or direct sunlight.

Instructions for Use

For serious illnesses, take 1 pill; for minor ailments, take half a pill. Place it in a small-mouthed wine bottle, add 1 large bowl of ash-free boiled wine, seal tightly with oiled paper, and double-boil for the duration of 2 sticks of incense. Remove and consume while hot until a foul-smelling sweat is induced. Those with robust vital energy should take one dose every other day; those who are weak should take one dose every 3–4 days.For conditions such as severe skin disorders, take up to 20 pills until the illness is cured; thereafter, take another 20 pills, place them in a jar with a spout, add 30 bowls of high-quality, ash-free wine to soak them, seal the jar tightly, and steam as described above—ensuring no steam escapes. Drink 3 wine cups at a time to eradicate the root cause of the illness.Before taking the medicine, first prepare a concentrated decoction using approximately two liang each of Fangfeng, Perilla, Impatiens root, Sophora branch, Schizonepeta, and Rubus root to bathe in; then take the medicine.

Note

Avoid exposure to drafts and abstain from pork, fish, mutton, chicken, goose, wheat bran, greasy foods, grilled or roasted foods, fried or stir-fried foods, and spicy or toxic substances.
