Drug Formulation

Hemp seeds (shelled, kernels only, select plump ones) 36 grains, cinnabar 1 qian (ground into an extremely fine powder; it is best to use “Dou Hong Pi Sha”), musk 5 li.

The formula is from *Wan’s Gynecology*, Volume 1; the name appears in *The Collection of Immortal Prescriptions*, Volume 3.

Processing

Grind the cinnabar and musk into a fine powder together, then add the hemp seeds; grind all three ingredients together until extremely fine to form a paste.

Instructions for Use

On the 5th day of the 5th lunar month at noon, apply the paste to the child’s head and neck, solar plexus, upper back, palms of both hands, soles of both feet, both elbow creases, both armpits, and both knee creases—a total of 13 areas—ensuring all are covered without leaving any residue. Do not wash or disturb the application afterward; allow it to fall off naturally.If applied once this year, a few smallpox lesions will appear; apply again on the Dragon Boat Festival the following year, and 1–2 lesions will appear; apply once more on the Dragon Boat Festival the year after that, and smallpox will never appear again. For infants under one year of age, applying the mixture on July 7 and September 9 according to the same method yields even better results.
